5 Easy And Proven Ways To Overcome Depression.
Today we're going to be discussing a topic that not a lot of people want to discuss because let's face it, it's not the happiest topic.Today we're going to be discussing the topic of depression.
Possibly even though you yourself may not have gone through depression, you may know people who have, you may want to use these tools to help lift others and allow them to feel better themselves.
Now let me start by saying what NOT to do.When a person is actually going through depression, unfortunately, those that have never suffered depression will say ridiculous things like,
"Well, just pull yourself out of it."
"I mean, seriously, just get over it."
"I mean, come on.You have everything in the world to be grateful for, why are you so depressed?"
OR
"Why don't you just pull yourself out of it?"
The thing is,a person who is actually going through depression, they don't have any motivation to get out of it.Different things happen inside the brain and in some cases, it can actually be a chemical imbalance which causes that person to literally lose all motivation.
So if you are going through depression, follow these steps.
Step 1: Validate Your Feelings
Step one is to validate the feelings that you're having. simply say to yourself;
"You know what?I feel depressed.It sucks.I don't like it.
Again, step number one is to validate the fact that yeah, you're feeling depressed. It's the first step in helping you to get out of it.
A lot of time, feelings simply beg to be validated and so allow yourself to recognize the fact that yeah, it doesn't feel very good.
Step 2:Do Something Passive
Step number two is doing something passive that might help you feel better.
You've now validated your feelings, when I'm in this step, I like to go on YouTube and pull up a funny video.
Something that I know will at least bring a smile to my face even if it's temporary.
So think of what could you do?Do you have something funny that you could pull up on your phone?Do you have a funny video that you could watch?
Is there a friend that you know that if you talk to them they can help you to feel better?
This step is as I mention, is to do something passive like watching a funny video.
Step 3:Choose Something You Can Look Forward To
Step number three is to choose something in the future that you can look forward to.
A lot of times when we feel depressed, we have this crazy notion that there's nothing worth even fighting for, there's nothing even worth living for in the moment, but if we can look forward to something in the future, that begins to get our minds off of what's causing the depression in the first place.
For example you could have some sort of a vacation plan.It doesn't necessarily have to be this huge grand exotic vacation. In fact,it can just be an evening get away.
Having something to look forward to allows us to say, you know what?
"I don't feel too good right now but oh boy,I cannot wait for this vacation that's coming up."
And doing that step allows you to uphold yourself just that much more out of depression.
Step 4: Exercise
Step number four, get moving.Studies have shown that simply moving your body especially in the form of exercise, yes, exercise, especially if it can be done outside when the weather is really nice, can actually be more effective in overcoming depression than a lot of the leading depression drugs.
Now I'm not saying if you're currently taking medication for depression to suddenly throw them all out and just start exercising, what I'm suggesting is that, exercise releases feel good hormones in the brain and it allows you to begin to feel better.
So find that exercise plan that works for you, whether that means walking around the block, whether that means joining a gym, whether that means lifting weights, whatever it is that works for you, begin to do it and allow your brain to then release those wonderful endorphins.
Step 5:Look For Lessons
Finally, step number five, look for the lessons.
I know it's not easy to see in the moment but absolutely, every experience in our life is designed and calculated to teach us certain lessons, aren't they?
The way to finally let go of depression, maybe from a past experience, is to recognize all the lessons that that experience was put in your life to teach you.
Once you could see all the lessons that you were able to learn and all the growth you were able to make because of that experience,it's so much easier to let go of that once and for all.
Oh, but , what about like, extreme cases?
What about a person that's like raped, how can that person learn those lessons?
The answer is, I don't know.
What I do know is one more time, every experience in our life is designed and calculated to teach us certain things and to give us certain experiences.
Maybe it's nothing more than to teach that person to not trust certain people.
I don't know, maybe it's to teach that person to be more careful in the future.
Maybe it's nothing more than to teach that person how to be grateful for absolutely everything.
I don't know.
Unfortunately, well, not unfortunately, thankfully,
I've never had to experience anything even close to that.
However, one thing I can guarantee you, is that by learning the lessons and seeing the good in the situation and yes, that means looking for good in the situation, you will be able to finally pull yourself out.
So use these five steps.
If you know someone that is currently going through depression, share this blog with them, discuss it with them and ask them how you can best show up in their lives.
Use these and let's do some good in the world!
